St. Joseph Catholic School focuses on the A’s of a well-rounded student

St. Joseph Catholic School, at 1326 6th Avenue in Huntington, has students in grades Pre-K through eighth grade. With the school’s vision to foster the A’s of a well-rounded student — A cademics, Athletics, Arts and the Appreciation of Christian morals and values — c urrent enrollment is 420 students.

“Our school is moving into the 21st century through its academic programs and technology avenues,” said Carol Templeton, the school’s principal.

Over the past several months, SMART boards have been installed throughout the grade school and middle school classrooms. Teachers are engaging students in learning through these interactive whiteboards.

With a touch of the screen, students can participate in an array of educational activities.

For the preschool technology program, each classroom for the 2-, 3-, and 4-year olds now has innovative SMART tables. With SMART tables, preschoolers are drawn to the table’s surface, where work and play can come together.

“The SMART Table is the first multitouch, multiuser interactive learning center that allows groups of early education students to work simultaneously on one surface,” Templeton said.

Beth Denney, a teacher in the 2-year-old preschool program, said, “The SMART Table helps the children learn in a fun and exciting way. It is a great tool for interactive programs, and it helps students work together with fellow friends in the classroom.

The students can learn shapes, numbers and letters, Spanish and become reading-ready.”

“Students are the future of our world, and we must work hard to ensure that the whole child is being educated to be successful citizens of our society,” Templeton said.

In an effort to increase the students’ technology level, computer
and keyboarding classes are offered. Chris Brown, the school’s technology specialist, said, “With keyboarding skills, students can prepare themselves for the future, i.e. high school, college and the work force.

Today’s society uses keyboarding every day with cell phones, laptops, iPads and computers.”

Through the school’s initiative towards the 21st century, students will leave St. Joseph Catholic School with a strong grasp of the ever-changing innovative world.
